Art Tours

Come and discover hidden art gems and creative artists working in Alex township. Our Art Tour will take you to see imaginative and productive potters, painters and sculptors at work. We will visit the vibrant Alex Art Market which is built enterprisingly from shipping containers and hosts work from a number of different artisans. You'll get to meet the artists and chat to them about their work. We'll go into artists' homes and self-made studios, as well as places of work. The tour also goes past the Alex Heritage museum and Madiba's first home, surrounded by many colourful murals and graffiti pieces. Although some items may be on sale - you won't be cornered into a sales room or forced to buy anything, don't worry! However, if you are looking for art or gifts, keep your eyes open! Many artists will accept Snapscan or EFT.

Corporate

A visit to Alex can be a fantastic element of your leadership development programme, team-building exercise or Corporate Social Responsibility programme. We can arrange visits to local businesses or meetings with entrepreneurs to expose your leaders to the 'base of the pyramid' or inspire them with grass-roots success stories. We can take your group to local social development programmes to provoke some new thinking or to look for partnering opportunities.

Be part of the energy, skill and teamwork of a gumboot dance and learn some moves from world champions as you prepare for a team dance-off! Or how about a team-building intervention with a difference, in the form of Amazing Race, treasure hunt or cook-off experience.

Cultural and Historic

Alexandra township has a vibrant culture and a rich and fascinating history. There are many cultural sites to explore from Mandela's house to the most popular shebeen, from the first church to the bustling mall. Learn about the history of Alex's street names and find out the secret of the township's first gang headquarters. Catch the dusk and dawn of local life by spending a night at a reputable inn. Join a drumming lesson or immerse yourself in the heritage museum.

Faith

Are you curious about how Alex residents express their Christian faith? Come and visit some church communities, explore church buildings, attend a service or enjoy the performance of a local choir. We can also arrange visits to church outreach projects, which could include participation in or contribution to the project by your team.

Sports

Have you ever wondered how athletes in Alex train? Why not come and experience sports in the township for yourself! Do some body building in the famous Ikhasi gym with owner and world championship qualifier, Tumi Modise (trained by Reg Park.) Do an aerobics class, play pool, join a basketball match or play tennis with the township's sportspeople. If running is your thing, we can arrange a guided run through the township for a 5 km, 10 km or 15 km run.

Modes of transport

All our tours can be tailored to your preferred mode of transport. We offer tours by air-conditioned car or minibus, by bicycle or on foot. You could also choose a combination of these. We do pick ups from any destination within 20 kms of Alexandra Mall.

Pricing

All Corporate tours are tailored to the needs of the group, thus pricing is provided on request following the brief. Minimum groups of 6 people.

Art, historic, cultural, faith and sports tours can also be tailored, thus prices will vary. As a guideline, a two-hour tour costs R300 per person. A four-hour tour costs R500 per person. Minimum groups of 2 people. These costs exclude meals.

Overnight stays are priced on request.

Cycling tours include bikes and helmets.

All tours include security.
